To me this piece isn't about the cover of a book, but about racial identity. Some of us have come to a place, where the cover is the race card. We look at someone coming and it is about their projection about what we think of them and it isn't bad, it's just defensive. And so we deal with them with kit gloves. Somebody you have never met before calls you a racist. Like you, you are following a policy that you didn't invent. At a point, you just want to say, "Nobody cares; you got arrested. This is the process. If you don't like it, don't get arrested."
