I don't think we think this way. We understand it as an extension, an extra power, an ability. There is a woman I am thinking of, who I have never seen with much make-up, although I have seen her with make-up in pictures, and she looks as beautiful as a woman can look. I prefer her unmade face and her hairy armpits as she stands up and lifts her arms in a cafe and says: "Do I look OK?" To which I simply say, "You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen." And she is. And she is the smartest I have ever met. She was a professor of English lit and a philosophy student. She has no flaws.
