I agree. I have walked in the worst neighborhoods and somehow made it through. I have walked almost everywhere in San Francisco very late at night. I used to write about it. I can’t imagine not having that freedom. This is not to say that accompanying a woman in these settings would be safe for me and her. I remember always fearing that question: “What would you do,” a girlfriend might ask, “if we were out together and a gang of men were going to attack me?” I once told a woman I loved that I would try to get the police, but I know what I would do. I would try to protect her with my life. Sadly, I know the outcome. I would be the distraction they would use to prove how macho they were. In the end, men do whatever the F they want to do. Not this man, mind you, but that doesn’t matter.
