Having grown up in Honolulu, where the Japanese culture is alive, there is a saying that the nail that stands up gets nailed down. It is a faux pax to attract attention. Like the English, it is not good to talk about yourself. Maybe it's an island thing, but it makes me love both cultures. There is a particular indignity in intruding on someone else's time and space.
