Art is always about truth and beauty. If an AI can produce beautiful work that speaks of the times it may succeed, which as a statement about the times, AI-produced work may have artistic value, just as a toilet in a museum is profound. Dada is about the conversation. Nothing is bad art per se because even the question of what is bad art is a discussion getting to the question of art. Each AI construct will have to be analyzed. I bet AI will not be able to produce art because it is not a human being. Oh, another way to tell is that we’ve had image-filtering with Photoshop for years. As an artist, I have combed through the offerings to find a filter to illustrate the image I have in my minds eye, and also as a graphic designer, I have looked for fonts that complement the image with a book, an opera, or what have you. If AI can match that thought process then yes, perhaps, it can create art, or as implied in my use of Photoshop or Illustrator, AI will create a compromise of what the art should be. Art comes as an idea. Will AI get these ideas? Is AI the message, as Marshal McLuhan said, where we become the iPhone, or the Illustrator, or the Photoshop? Often, the tool dictates the creator/created.
