Actually, I think he had so many buildings that free rent was no problem since he must have cleared his mortgage or tax payments by a mile, which makes this all the more insidious. He had a means to a sexual end. He would and does, I am sure, take advantage of probably a number of women in your situation. This Medium piece makes the inequality clear: https://theapeiron.co.uk/the-real-problem-with-rich-people-55951d84bb00

Now, I am going to be crass here, and say that commenting on your statement: "Some women end up feeling like they don't have a choice." As a friend said, "Your savings is your freedom." And women don't have to have children. Women don't have to pick menial jobs. They don't have to get stuck in this quagmire of compromise. But, as I just cited, this problem of poverty and access is systemic.

I also love that you say this is "absolutely illegal," which it is, and this closes the books on this matter. In fact, rather than it threaten your being able to live there, it might allow you to stay there rent free, because now you have mentioned the situation and if he retaliates against you, I bet that's even more illegal and consequential. So, complaining might just stop him in his tracks. I am glad he used text to communicate his intentions. Slammed shut case.

Your piece is wonderful. Thank you!
